Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying such drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
