No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
